Yeah, this is way less about poker strategy than anything but I thought it would be a fun article to write. Being that there are 4 basic categories of players – the tight passive, the tight aggressive, the loose passive, and the loose aggressive we’ll be addressing each table style and what it says about your life, your relationship to money, and much more.
The Tight Passive Player- This style of player most likely has a poor relationship with money. In all likelihood this style of player actually knows quite a bit about poker theory, and may actually mentally be at the point of a future WSOP champion, once they get their money issues in line. There could be a variety of reasons this player is tight passive – they’re a doormat in regular life and continue to act as one at the table, they live paycheck to paycheck and being as such are afraid of losing more money at the table, thus not allowing them to take risks, or their understanding of the game has crippled them to the point that they can’t act unless the information from their reading is also happening at the table exactly as described. The best thing for a tight passive player to do to move on to the next level is to develop a healthier relationship with money. How they can accomplish this would be part of a completely different article (or even book) but that would be the first step in moving forward in their poker game.
The Loose Passive Player – This style of player falls into one of two categories – they’re new to the game or they simply don’t care if they win or lose. In some cases its both put together. These are casual players who really don’t care about the outcome of the game. They more than likely have zero dreams of playing against professionals, or going to the world series. For them, the game is more about passing time than actually playing solid poker. Their relationship to money is solid as they’re only spending what they can afford to lose (in most cases anyway, unless its a player who’s gone on tilt, but they’d qualify as a different playing style most of the time) and preparing just to enjoy themselves while they play. The drive to win isn’t there, they’re casual players.
The Tight Aggressive Player – This type of playing style would most likely be seen by individuals who are looking to control the table. They want to make wise decisions when they put their money into play, and are looking for a return on their investment. This group would qualify as someone who is typically good with their money, and don’t like taking risks that have the potential for little reward. The tight aggressive is most likely looking to move on to the next level of play.
The Loose Aggressive Player – This player understands that money comes and money goes. They take risks in an effort to achieve reward. They may behave in a similar manner in their social lives as well. In the stock market this type of player would also be willing to risk on certain “iffy” stocks if the reward potential were high enough for them. The loose aggressor also likes taking control of situations and could move on to the next level of play.
